The drummer can’t go to church NOW that the second and hopefully not the last regrouping of Eraserheads is as sure as sunlight, it is just a matter of course for us showbiz people to peek into the not-so-secret lives of the four iconic members. Touted as the greatest Pinoy rock outfit to hit the scene in terms of international following and creative output, the collective accomplishment of vocalist Ely Buendia, drummer Raimund Marasigan, lead guitarist Marcus Adoro and bassist Buddy Zabala is said to be a feat that has surpassed even that of the legendary Juan de la Cruz band. But that is not our focus here. We are all aware how hard it has been for the band members to preserve their privacy. But fans will be fans. The recent victim has been Marasigan, whose involvement in his community’s church choir has been affected. We’ve heard reports that die-hard fans from various parts of Metro Manila go to that once-secluded church in a city up north, not to hear Sunday Mass but to see Marasigan and have the usual photo-op/autograph session. Before the church factoid came out, no one minded Marasigan, who usually goes to church with partner Mayrene Academia and their son, whose name we shall now hide for security reasons. In that church, Marasigan has been a regular fixture for a decade. Even during the height of his career as the band leader of Sandwich, no one among the churchgoers bothered him. He once described Eraserheads as some kind of a four-headed beast, sleeping deep and sound for the last six years, and is now wide awake. Indeed, he needs to hide for the moment because the beast has found him. Church regulars now see less of him during Sunday Mass because of the deluge of irrepressible fans.
